The bear was adopted as a mascot by the US Coast Guard soon after the turn of the 20th century. In 1926, a young cadet returned from leave with a live bear cub, who was named Objee, short for objectionable presence. A favorite with cadets, Objee lived in many homes over the years, and ultimately lived up to his name. After more than six decades of active duty, Objee was retired to a farm in New York state. |
